Rustic Roads

I finally got out this summer and took a drive up to Wisconsin
There are miles and miles of rustic roads

The picture above was taken in 2012

This one was taken in 2013

Here's the same barn yesterday

Such a big beautiful barn on a stunning piece of property
I wonder why they didn't save it.

These people are not poor.
There is a beautiful house next to this barn.

  1. :) Ah Wisconsin! Sure are a lot of rustic roads! You might find the Amish wandering them! Sounds like a wonderful drive. A lot of people like doing this kind of activity on the weekends....aka. the "Sunday Drive":) Always fun and what makes Wisconsin so interesting.

  3. Oh my. I've never documented an aging barn - that is unbelievable. I need to do that. We find that there are lots of new and expensive houses on the same property with old barns and the barns are slowly returning to the earth. I've heard that it is far cheaper to let the barn deteriorate and fall in than even to take it apart - and of course it costs less than refurbishing. So sad to see them go. Excellent series of photos.

  5. Yes, it's so sad. The owners may be elderly and just don't have the capacity to deal with it, or more than likely, as JoAnn says, it's just cheaper to let it fall. I'm surprised that it has deteriorated so much in such a short time. At least 25 years ago I remarked to my mother that the car house my grandfather built in 1926 would probably blow over with the next big wind. It's still there today and every time I go down to the old place I expect to see it laying on the ground. Maybe it's just a testament to the superior work he did. I remember thinking as a child that it was a very old building and I turned 70 this year! I hope you show us some more photos of your road trip. There are a lot of things to see along the way in that distance!

  6. Ahhh...it does make one wonder...terribly expensive to save a barn and pay taxes on it...has to be a reason...

  7. To bad about the barn. That happens a lot. Must be cheaper to build new that to restore.
    Great pictures anyway.

  8. Oh, my. Hard to see the rapid rate of decline in just 2 years.

  9. Oh no! That is heartbreaking. I love old barns, but I know they are very expensive to restore. Beautiful photos of it though. Lots of history..

  10. ahhh, such a shame...Some people just can't really see beauty in an olden building....

  11. My goodness- and it looks like it is full of "stuff" too. Maybe it would be too costly to fix, but I definitely would get my things out of it before I let the roof fall on top of it all.
